Good Morning

Please find attached this week's issue of the All In A Week.

Congratulations to next week’s TWO Raiders of the Week.

Our first Raider is Mackenzie Green who in her first semester in high school achieved the highest overall average in the entire school with an astonishing 97.25%.  Mackenzie combines a determination to succeed in her studies with an equally strong commitment to athletics.  Congratulations Mackenzie!

Our second Raider is Hannah Spasov for delivering the best XC ski race of her career, placing 4th place in Senior girls and earning an OFSAA qualification.  Hannah showed exceptional determination to excel this season and practiced extra hard adding additional practices onto her schedule every weekend.  Her fierce determination this year is symbolic of the "PCVS way!"  Her coach, Mr. Peterson is extremely proud of her.  She is a force to be reckoned with!

I just returned from the Peterborough High School All Star hockey match against members of the Peterborough Lakefield Community police.  The Memorial Centre was abuzz with the excitement of over 2000 teenagers and teachers from secondary schools of both boards.   It was a wonderful community activity which ended with the students being victorious with a final score of 7-5.  We owe our three “all stars”, Jess Whiston, Jenna Davis and Eli Cook a big thank you for representing PCVS so well!

Congratulations also to our cross country ski team who competed at COSSA earlier this week. Josh Nevills placed 2nd in Junior Boys, Hannah Spasov finished in 4th place for the Senior Girls and Jasmine Vanderwal placed 6th for Senior Girls. Aidan Conrad also qualified to compete at OFSAA, which we will be held on February 22nd and 23rd.

We had a very successful Valentine’s dance last night with almost 160 student revelers.  It was a fun evening that was made possible through the efforts of Ms. Sherry Latchford, Mr. Shawn Davis and their army of Student Council members, particularly Collin Chepeka and Kirstin Bruce who were the student conveners.

Some of our senior classes will be attending a presentation by Katimavik (Volunteer Program across Canada) on Thursday in the auditorium.  If your child is interested but is not scheduled to attend, be sure to have them see Mr. Cook in Guidance.

Tomorrow we will be at Lansdowne Place to raise awareness and funds for the Spread the Net Campaign as we move into its conclusion.  There will be a BIG SURPRISE happening around the food court at noon – be sure to drop by if you are in the area. I will be on the table from eleven to twelve and then heading down to the food court.  Hope to see you there!

Have a wonderful, safe weekend.  Be sure to give me a call or drop by if you have any questions.  Happy Family Day!

Good Afternoon

Please find attached this week's issue of the All In A Week.

Congratulations to next week's Raider of the Week, Ryan Perry.  Over the past few years Ryan has volunteered countless hours in the Fashion Room creating costumes for a variety of performances.  He has been a supportive peer tutor for junior students and is always ready to offer kind support to everyone!

As I write this both senior and junior Raiders are competing in basketball tournaments.  Our junior team played this afternoon on a home court in the Kawartha Classic and will go into a second game shortly.  We wish them luck in the tournament, which will continue this weekend at a number of schools in the city.  The senior boys team travelled to Winnipeg yesterday to play in the Tech Voc tournament.  Although they were not successful in their first game, they will be taking to the court again at 4:45 today (Winnipeg time) for a second game.  You can follow their progress, watch a live stream of the games and visit a photo gallery by going to www.tecvoc.ca  We wish both teams luck and know that as always, they are wonderful ambassadors for PCVS!

This coming Thursday night we will be holding the much anticipated Valentine's dance from 7 to 10 p.m.  Proceeds will go to Spread the Net and the 2012 Formal Committee.  Students who attend will be required to wear "indoor shoes" to protect the floors of the gym.

There are many, many events happening to support our fundraising for "Spread the Net".  New t-shirts have just arrived which can be purchased for $15 - this includes both the shirt and a net!  Valentine's Day net gift cards can also be purchased for $10.  As we move into the final push of the campaign, more and more events are planned.  We will be at Lansdowne Place on February 18th to promote the campaign, raise awareness about the issue and to raise funds.  I will be there from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and hope to see lots of friendly faces.  If you are at Lansdowne Place at twelve noon, you will certainly be in for a surprise ... Mr. Douglas and his multitude of volunteers have big plans in the works!

This coming Friday, we will all be travelling to the Memorial Centre to watch a high school "All Star" team play hockey against the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police. Our three "all stars" are Jess Whiston, Jenna Davis and Eli Cook.   Permission forms went home earlier in the week and the cost is two dollars.  Proceeds will go to support initiatives related to Drug Awareness Week.  We are looking forward to a student victory!

It has been a "crazy, busy" week at PCVS, but there has been tremendous energy in the building.  With so many events and trips coming up this spring (including Greece and Vimy Ridge), the halls are lined with tables at lunch promoting them all. Quite a sight to see!

Have a wonderful weekend and please give me a call if you have any thoughts you would like to share.

Good Morning

Please find attached this week's issue of the All In A Week.

Congratulations to our first Raider of the Week for Semester two - Sabin Ciotir.  Sabin is a dedicated and hard working member of the homework club and he works hard to achieve his academic goals!

One thing that I love about secondary schools is that twice each year we all get a fresh start - a chance to begin all over again!  We began semester two by reminding students that today is a new beginning.  We encouraged them to take advantage of it and to find success!

Each semester we have new faces at PCVS.  We began our morning by welcoming new students to the school, as well as new staff members.  We are thrilled to have Mr. Keith Noland with us in the English department, Mr. Scott Russell will be teaching geography and science, and Ms. Meaghan Dyas will be teaching history.  Within the school there have also been some staff changes, which has meant that Mr. Barry Adams will be full-time in the Resource department and Mr. Bill Clarke will be taking over in the library.

One of our school goals this year is to raise awareness around issues related to youth mental health.  To that end, we have held assemblies, hosted guest speakers and provided additional training for staff. Today there is one of a new series of posters in every classroom.  Mr. Peterson's semester one grade ten Communications Technology class created the posters while working in partnership with the Canadian Mental Health Association and the Peterborough County-City Health Unit. In each class, teachers will speak to the poster as students move through this unique "gallery" throughout the day.

Each semester we have students who are in need of backpacks and school supplies and we have a collection of these items in my office, the Guidance office, Resource and the Student Success room.  If your child, or a child you know needs these items, please be sure to give me a call.

This weekend our senior boys Basketball team will be travelling to the Winnipeg Invitational tournament held at Tec-Voc School.  Twelve of our students, under the supervision of Mr. Rick Nelson, Mr. Steve Deline, and Mr. Dale Friesen, will compete in this tournament for the eighth year - having won three times and been runner up two times in the past.  I know that you will join me in wishing our Raiders luck on the court!

That is all for now.  Have a good week and please don't hesitate to call me if you have any concerns.

Good Morning

Please find attached this week’s issue of the All In A Week.

Congratulations to this week’s Raider of the Week, Scott Walling.  This is the first time that the Raider of the Week is also the co-op student of the week!  Scott was nominated for this determination to capture events at PCVS in pictures.  His positive and energetic presence at school events is infectious and he is determined to also catch daily life of students and staff in photos.  Scott is a good friend to his peers and a conscientious student!

Congratulations also to Ms. Clarke and her huge team of dancers who put on two wonderful shows this weekend.  This semester’s spectacular show entitled “PCVS – Then. Now. Forever.” drew very large audiences who showed their appreciation for the talents of our dance students.  Half of all proceeds raised went to the “Spread the Net” campaign.

Last week we continued to work with students to complete option sheets for next year.  While we will continue to attempt to contact students who have not yet made selections, we will be completing sheets for those students who do not answer the call to the Guidance department.

Tomorrow evening the grade nine Integrated Arts students will stage their first performance at PCVS, "Sometimes I Wake Up" - a study in teen life.  The show begins at 7 p.m., and tickets are $5.00.  The first time that students take to the stage at PCVS is always an exciting one for students, staff and parents alike!

Please be sure to take a look at the exam schedule.  We will begin with period one exams on Thursday.  In the event of bus cancellations due to weather, the missed exam will move to the following day, and all exams will move back one day.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Have a wonderful week.

Good Morning

Please find attached this week's issue of the All In A Week.

Congratulations to Mahnoor Zahid who is this week's Raider of the Week.  Mahnoor volunteers her time in the ESL class almost every period one as an "unofficial peer tutor".  She is unfailingly patient and kind when working with the students and is a true asset to the the ESL and wider school community!

Thanks to the hard work of Al Cook, the Guidance, Resource and School Success staff we have completed option sheets for all four area schools for September.  This week we will continue to meet with those students who have not yet submitted option sheets.   As always the Guidance office staff are available for one on one consultations and appointments can be made in the Guidance office.   As is the case each year, beginning next week, we will go ahead and complete option sheets for those students who have not done so, and who are under the age of eighteen.  We do this to ensure that there is a program available to them in September.  If your child has registered to attend a school other than TASSS, Crestwood, Adam Scott or Kenner, please call either myself or Mr. Cook.

The Transition Committee met last week to talk about issues related to the consolidation of PCVS in September 2012.  This committee is chaired by Supt. Peter Mangold and each Peterborough area public school is represented by a parent (Ms. Grace Loucks), a teacher (Ms. Cyd Hosker), two students (Collin Chepeka and Evan Ruston) and the principal.  Last week we discussed issues related to facilities and transportation.  One challenge that we will be addressing once we have an idea of the numbers of students electing to go to which school is how to make the transition run as smoothly as possible, particularly in the amalgamation of student leadership groups, clubs and teams.

Moratorium began today as we prepare for exams.  Please note the schedule attached on the All In A Week. The first exam will be held on Thursday, January 26.  Please also note that the cafeteria will be closed during exams and that the buses will operate at the usual time.

The dance recital entitled:  Then. Now. Forever., will take to the stage on Jan. 19 & 20 in the auditorium beginning at 6.30 pm.  The audience will be able to experience a variety of dance genres while celebrating the talents of this semester's dance students.  Admission for adults is $8.00,  students/children: $5.00 and families, $15.00.  Partial proceeds from this show will benefit the PCVS Spread the Net campaign.

School Council will meet this Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. in room 107, at which time a lunch of soup and biscuits will be provided by the LLS class.  This program supports LLS outings and the hot lunch program.  We have been holding our meetings at different times throughout the day to enable more parents and guardians to attend.  If you have agenda items, please contact me before Wednesday.  As I am at another meeting, Mr. Paul Doig, Vice Principal will represent school administration at that meeting.

As always, please be sure to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.  Have a wonderful week.

Good Afternoon

Please find attached this week's issue of the All In A Week.

Congratulations to Andrew Rickard who is this week's Raider of the Week.  Andrew was tremendously generous of his time and talents during the Christmas hamper program.  Andrew worked with family members to create complete baking kits for the baskets!

Congratulations also to Cassidy Connelly.  Cassidy returned late last night from Cancun Mexico where she competed with the Ontario gymnastics team.  Cassidy was in flights with gymnasts from the United States, Japan and Mexico at the end of which she placed fourth overall and she helped her team to a second place finish.  We are very proud of Cassidy's outstanding achievement, which she manages while performing at a high academic level!

We had an incredibly dynamic last week before Christmas.  The Gala on the 20th was a wonderful success and we raised over $7000 for "Spread the Net" and the PCVS poverty intervention initiatives.  Thank you for your support!  Thank you also goes out to the the "army" of parents and retired teachers who provided school staff with a feast for lunch on the last day of school.  It was a much appreciated gift and really added a festive flair to our week.  We closed the week with the Christmas House Skits and the staff skit. If you were able to attend, I hope you enjoyed it - there were many memorable moments!  I am also including our holiday staff photo that we took after the assembly - all of us sporting our new PCVS scarves.  We had just finished performing in a staff skit, which explains our street dance attire.

Option sheets for next year are being completed this week.  Today students completed selections for Kenner and Crestwood.  Tomorrow we will spend the entire day working with students who plan to attend TASSS in September and on Thursday morning we will focus on Adam Scott.  With the support of Guidance, Resource and administrative staff from both schools, students have had the chance to ask lots of questions of clarification.  Students are permitted to complete only one option sheet so need to have made a choice between TASSS or their other designated school before completing a form.  Students leave the draft option sheet with us and bring home a second copy to be approved or revised by parents.  Students who wish to attend a school other than one of the two designated schools will need to complete an option sheet for one of the latter and an "Out of Boundary Request" form for the former.

As we move into preparation for exams, it is important for parents to note that moratorium will begin on Monday January 16th.  This is a period of time during which we do not hold out of class excursions so that students can focus on their studies.  As a great deal of assessment takes place in the final weeks, it is critical that students be in attendance.

Please note that there has been a revision to the exam schedule with period one exams being written on Thursday, January 26th (followed by shortened  periods 2, 3 and 4) , period two on the 27th, period 3 on the 30th, and period 4 exams on the 31st.  Wednesday, February 1st will be held for exams that need to be re-scheduled in the event of inclement weather.  Students should be in their exam rooms for 8:45 a.m. each day. Friday February 3rd is a PA Day.  At the conclusion of exams, students will not return to school until second semester begins on Monday, February 6th.

EQAO testing for grade nine math students will run on January 17 and 18.  All students who are registered in grade nine academic or applied mathematics this semester must complete this provincial assessment, so please ensure that your child is present.

School council will meet next Wednesday, January 18th at 11:15 a.m. in room 107 - all are welcome.  We will enjoy the weekly soup creation of the LLS.  Please forward any agenda items to either myself or Margaret Marchen.

That is all for now - have a wonderful week and Happy New Year!  Please be sure to give me a call or email if you have any concerns.

Monday, December 19, 2011

Good Morning

 12192011_95338_0.png
Please find attached this week’s All In A Week.

We have a very exciting week planned.  Tomorrow evening, the PCVS school community will host a Gala and Open House in celebration of our students and school.  Beginning at seven p.m., there will be exhibitions in classrooms, a coffee house, live performances, demonstrations, holiday treats, a silent auction and … Santa Claus.  The Open House will be followed by a Gala in the auditorium with performances by current students, alumnae and staff.  There is no charge for admission, but we will be accepting donations to the Spread the Net campaign and to the school Poverty Intervention initiatives.  Everyone is welcome – we look forward to seeing you there!

The Spread the Net campaign continues.  Anti-malaria mosquito nets for children in Africa can be purchased in someone’s name, as a Christmas gift.  Gift cards are available in the Guidance office during the day or in front of the cafeteria at lunch for $10.  Our goal is to raise $8000 by the time the campaign concludes in February.  More information can be found on the school web-site.

Thank you to everyone who donated to the Poverty Intervention and Inclusion initiatives at PCVS this year.  Thanks to the generosity of our parents, staff and students we will be delivering almost sixty individual gift and food packages over the course of the week.  The clothing, food and hygiene banks at PCVS will continue to run into the New Year for daily use of our students.

On Friday, we will hold our annual Christmas assembly for students in the auditorium – the highlight of which is always the house skits.  We will run with an alternate schedule with all four classes in the morning, followed by the assembly and lunch.

Tomorrow in period one, summaries of the courses offered at each of the other four schools for next year will be distributed.  All students will receive a course summary for TASSS and their other designated school.  At that time, students will also receive a letter from the school to go home to parents.  It is important that students review the course summaries over the holidays with their parents.  Beginning on January 10 and running through to the 12th, students will complete an option sheet for next year.  As each student can only do ONE option sheet, students will need to decide which school they plan to attend in September by the time they return from the holidays.

On behalf of the PCVS staff and students, I would like to wish you a joyous, safe and happy Christmas holiday.  We are blessed to be a part of such a wonderful community and look forward to the New Year.  Thank you for your on-going support and words of encouragement!

Take care - Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah and a Joyous Kwanzaa!

Good Afternoon

Please find attached next week's issue of the All In A Week.

Congratulations to next week’s Raider of the Week, Taylor Armitage.  Taylor was nominated by fellow students because she is a great friend to others.  Taylor is kind, positive, considerate and empathetic -  the kind of leader that many of us strive to be!

We had a fabulous semi formal last night with the theme “Miracle on McDonnel Street”.  There were almost 300 students in attendance and a wonderful evening was had by all, including the staff supervisors.  They felt that it was the “best dance” we have had and that the student behaviour was exemplary … it was a “feel good” evening all round.  A big thank you goes to Ms. Moloney and the formal committee for their hard work in making the evening such a success.

Free holiday gift making workshops will run on Monday to Thursday for interested students of all grades.  Each day there will be one or two selections for students and all materials will be provided.  For those students who may need transportation home, free bus tickets will be available for public transportation.  Please encourage your child to try one or more of the workshops and save themselves some Christmas shopping.

The Winter Music Concert will be held this coming Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium.  There will be a wide selection of genres of music so I hope you can join us.  It is always an evening full of festively wonderful performances.  No admission.

The Grade twelve drama production entitled “Stringy Beef” will take to the stage for two evening performances on the 15th and 16th.  Ms. Hughes and her students have worked hard to prepare this selection of scenes which is sure to please the audience.  Admission is $5 or “pay what you can”.

PCVS has a long and storied history and in this, our 185th year, we will hold a celebration of our students and their achievements.  The PCVS Gala will be at the school from 7:00 – 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 20th.  All members of the community are invited to join in this celebration.  The evening will begin with an open house across the entire building, followed by a gala performance in the auditorium starting at 8 p.m.  This is one night that you should be sure to attend!

The four other high schools in Peterborough will be holding open houses for PCVS students and parents all next week.  On Monday, TASSS will host our families with ASCVI on Tuesday, Kenner on Wednesday and Crestwood on Thursday evening.  All open houses will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Option sheets will be completed the first week that we return from Christmas holidays.  All four schools have now posted their course calendars for next year online and I would encourage you to check out what courses the schools have to offer.  There is a link to all the calendars from the PCVS web page.

PCVS Spreads the Net campaign continues
Mosquito nets for Africa can be purchased in someone’s name  - as a Christmas gift or otherwise.  Gift cards are available in the guidance office during the day, and in front of the cafeteria during lunch.  See attached sample.  Each net and card costs $10; more than one net can be indicated on each card.  For purchases/donations of $30 or more, a wire sculpture (VW bug or motorcycle) made near PCVS’s sister school in Zimbabwe is offered as a thank-you.  For purchases of 5 nets or more ($50), you may choose a candle-holder – a woman or giraffe motif - also from Zimbabwe.

Participating students were given pledge sheets on Tuesday.  More events are planned for January and February, and parents' suggestions are welcome!  Contact Mr Douglas at cameron_douglas@kprdsb.ca with questions or ideas.

As always, you may reach me by phone at school, 705-742-0425 (ext. 202), or send an email if there is anything you wish to discuss.

P.S. A number of parents have contacted the school asking for more details regarding the Christmas Hamper program.  I am forwarding a copy of the list as distributed to staff at the school.

Good Afternoon

Please find attached next week's issue of the All in a Week (coming soon).

Congratulations to next week's Raider of the Week, Joseph Fuentes.  Joseph is very kind and friendly to all students, particularly to his peers in the Learning Life Skills class.  Joseph always makes the time to talk to people in the halls.  With his positive attitude and ready smile, he really demonstrates what it means to live the "PCVS Way".

The school was "rocking" this afternoon during period four as we launched the "Spread the Net" campaign. PCVS has a long standing connection to humanitarian efforts in Africa. Our students have travelled to Sierra Leone, West Africa, to work with students at our sister school on issues around HIV/AIDS and youth leadership. We have also had an active relationship for the past 7 years with Nyachuru Secondary School in Zimbabwe where we’ve exchanged letters and art work, sent school supplies, farming tools, bicycles and money. Our African Connections group has been very active at school and in the community for the past 8 years. PCVS is now reaching out to support the need for mosquito nets. CBC’s Rick Mercer champions this cause and challenges schools to raise money to purchase nets. The school that raises the most money in each of 3 categories (colleges/universities, high schools, and elementary schools) receives a visit from the Rick Mercer Report and is featured on his program that enjoys an audience of 2 million Canadians. This year’s contest closes on February 29, and winning schools will be featured in March. PCVS will be raising money in school and in the community for this very worthy cause - $10 buys one net. Parents, relatives, friends, alumni and other community members who would like to support our campaign are invited to forward cheques to the school, made out to PCVS - Spread the Net. Nets can be purchased in students’ names by purchasing gift cards. Tax receipts for donations $25 or more will be issued by the Belinda Stronach Foundation. Alternately, money can be donated online in the name of PCVS at http://goo.gl/oyHD3

All next week we will by participating in the Amnesty International "Write for Rights" campaign.  This is a yearly event at PCVS and students and staff will be writing letters that will go around the world urging countries to work for those who are being held in prison in violation of their human rights.

Closer to home, we launched our annual Toy and Food Drive this past Monday.  The new toys collected will be donated to the Country 105 toy drive and the non perishable food items will help to fill Christmas hampers for families in our school community.  All donations are welcome.

You may have noticed some beautiful art on the white wall outside of the gym this week.  This was a fund-raiser for the school poverty intervention initiatives and it was run by Ms. Hosker's art class.  The theme "Be a Part of It" encouraged all of us, even those like myself with limited talent, to participate in creating something beautiful.   Balls were soaked in paint and then thrown against the wall to create a stunning effect.

If you are attending the Santa Claus parade tomorrow you will see a 48 foot float for PCVS with the theme "PCVS at the Movies".  It has been a crazy couple of days here as students and staff have worked to build the float by re-creating a 3D image of the school.  Look for it tomorrow night and I'm certain that you will recognize many familiar faces among the "elves".

Next Wednesday and Thursday, students will be touring area schools in preparation for next year.  Permission forms can be picked up in the Guidance office or down-loaded from the web-site [Grades 9 and 10; Grades 11 and 12].  Grade nine and ten students will be on tours on the morning of December 7th and the grades eleven a twelve students will be touring all day on the 8th.  As this is a full school activity that is supervised by our own staff, we will not be running classes for those grades at the time of the tour.

The semi-formal will be held next Thursday, December 8th at the school.  The theme is "Miracle on McDonnel Street" and it is open to students of all grades. This dance hosted by the PCVS Formal Committee in preparation for the Senior Formal in the spring.

There is so much going on, that I am certain I am missing things.  Please be sure to check out the attachments as well the the PCVS web-site for more information.

Have a glorious weekend!

Good Afternoon

Please find attached next week's issue of the All In A Week.

Congratulations to next week's Raider of the Week, Collin Chepeka.  Collin was nominated by both students and staff because he exemplifies the qualities of a student leader.  His love for the school, his creative spirit and his kindness make him a role model for his peers.  He is always positive and supportive of his classmates and friends and has taken on a wide range of extra-curricular responsibilities in the school.  Collin manages to do all of this while maintaining a high level of excellence in his academic achievements.

I just left the gym where our senior boys basketball team was triumphant in their first game of the annual Kawartha Classic tournament.  It was an exciting and sometimes, nail-biting, match.  Their next game is in the PCVS gym at 7 p.m. tonight (Friday).  If you are looking for some good athletic entertainment, consider checking it out!

We have just completed the "Ropes and Wreaths" fundraiser for this holiday season, under the direction of Ms. Brenda Mancini.  Thank you to everyone who purchased a fresh wreath or garland.  We raised in excess of $1000 for poverty intervention initiatives that will run throughout the year.  Funds will support the hot lunch program, Christmas gift making workshops, yearbook sponsorship, school trip expenditures, the clothing bank and a multitude of other initiatives.

This coming week, SAC will start the "Double, Double" Christmas toy and food drive.  A box will be placed in each homeroom for donations of new toys that will go to the Country 105 toy drive as well as for canned items for the PCVS student food bank.  We especially need festive foods for holiday hampers, hygiene products for both males and females and the ever popular items such as peanut butter and cereals.  All donations are greatly appreciated.

As you know, on December 7th and 8th, students will be going to tour prospective schools for next year.  I have attached a copy of the letter that went home with all students last week explaining the process.  The purpose of the tours is to allow our students an opportunity to see what programs and courses those schools have to offer.  Students will meet school staff, have a tour and have an opportunity to ask questions of Guidance counselors and school administration.  Permission forms were also distributed to students - those are attached as well [Grades 9 and 10; Grades 11 and 12].  Please be sure to submit completed forms as soon as possible.  As these tours are school wide activities which require teacher supervision, we will not be running regularly scheduled classes.

I started visiting classes this week to answer questions that students have about the transition process and course selections.  For your information, all schools will have their course calendars online on November 30th and we will create a link from our school web-page.  If your child wishes to attend a school other than their assigned school, an Out of Boundary form will need to be submitted before January 30 for consideration.  This form can be found on the board web-site or a hard copy can be obtained in our office.

Message from the Board Office:  The Kawartha Pine Ridge DSB is now looking to gather input into our 2012-2013 School Year Calendar.  The Option A and B Calendar Survey will be posted on the Board's website www.kprschools.ca under "In the Spotlight" on the home page. All stakeholders (students, parents/guardians, staff, community) input is appreciated and will be reviewed and considered in making final recommendations for board and ministry approval.

Have a wonderful weekend. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns.

Good Morning

Please find attached this week's issue of the All In A Week.

Congratulations to Kostia Arlouski, this week's Raider of the Week.  Kostia is a wonderfully kind young man, who is always supportive of everyone in the school, particularly his ESL peers.  Kostia is always willing to try something new and is a mainstay contributor with the African drumming group.

Our first talent show of the year was last week - what an incredible morning.  There were dancers, singers and musicians galore to make for a beautiful and moving morning!  We are all looking forward to the "Senior Salute" talent show in the spring!

We have had our first graduate from the International Business SHSM at PCVS.  Congratulations Charlie Song!  To graduate with his SHSM red seal, Charlie was required to complete a number of specific courses, related certifications and a work placement.  Students at PCVS are also able to participate in SHSM's that focus on Technical Theatre, Health and Wellness and Renewable Energy.

Students attended assemblies last week to discuss school visits that are being offered by TASSS, Adam Scott, Crestwood and Kenner in early December.  Al Cook, head of Guidance, also spoke to the option selection process for the coming year.  A letter and permission forms were distributed to all students (copy of letter attached). Permission forms are to be returned by Thursday, November 24th (electronic copies can be found on the school web-site: Grades 9 and 10; Grades 11 and 12).  As I'm certain you are aware, students still have many questions about the transition process and myself or Mr. Cook will visit each class over the next two weeks to address some of their queries.

Report cards will be distributed to students tomorrow.  Final exams for semester one will take place from January 27th to February 1st.  All absences during exams must be verified by a medical note or have prior approval from myself.

A reminder that this Friday (November 25th) is a PA day!

Have a wonderful week - please give me a call if you have any questions.

Good Morning

Please find attached this week's issue of the All In A Week.

Congratulations to our Raider of the Week, Justin Schofield.  Justin’s video about PVCS, “Then, Now and Forever” demonstrates true Raider pride, creativity and drive.

School Council will meet this Wednesday at 8:15 a.m. in room 107 at which time we will have breakfast courtesy of the Breakfast Club.  The focus of the meeting will be school efforts around Inclusion and Poverty Intervention.  All are welcome.

Last week I sent out order forms for the "Ropes and Wreaths" fundraiser for poverty intervention.  If you are interested in ordering fresh Christmas wreaths and garlands, although orders are due today, we will put in a second order on Wednesday this week.

At this time of year, high schools are thinking about course selections for the next school year - this is of course, will be an unusual process for PCVS this year.  On Thursday, November 17th there will be assemblies for all students during periods 3 and 4.  The purpose of the gatherings will be to discuss plans for tours to the four other area high schools in early December and to discuss the option sheet process for the coming year.

If you have a child or a friend in grade eight who is planning to apply for the Integrated Arts program for next year, please note that the application deadline is December 23rd with interviews and Master classes running on January 21st.  Check out the link to the IA page from the school web-page for more information.

Have a wonderful week.  Please give me a call if you have any concerns.

Good Evening

Please find attached this week's issue of the All In A Week.

Congratulations to our Raider of the Week, August MacDonald.  Since joining the IA program in September, August has explored all sorts of learning experiences at PCVS.  He has shown a tremendous boost in confidence being in front of his peers and recently performed his own music for them.  He has demonstrated that being a Raider means being willing to take risks and to try new things that might be outside of his comfort zone!

The next School Council meeting is Wednesday, November 16th at 8:15 a.m.  We will be having breakfast with the breakfast club and if you would like to see the program in action, this will be a good meeting to attend.  We will also discuss our School Improvement Plan with a particular focus on the Community Culture and Caring goals that focus on Youth Mental Health and Poverty Intervention. This is also the morning of our first talent show of the year, so the energy should be particularly high!

This Friday we will be having the annual Remembrance Day service.  This is a particularly important event in our school calendar as over 160 PCVS students left school to enlist in World Wars I and II and did not return.  Of particular note, Callum Kyle (class of 2007) will return to speak to our students about his experiences on duty in Afghanistan last year.  As is our tradition, we will be joining the public service of Remembrance at the conclusion of ours at approximately 10:25 a.m.

This past Saturday and Sunday, PCVS students and teachers participated in the Gulu Walk from outside of Lakefield to PCVS where they stayed overnight and then completed the routine journey in the morning.  This event takes place each year to raise awareness of the plight of children in Uganda who walk into a city each evening in attempts to avoid being pressed into service as child soldiers.

Be sure to check out the school web-site for more information about what is happening at PCVS ... there is always lots going on.  Have a great week and don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Good Afternoon

Please find attached this week's issue of the All In A Week.

You will also find attached a copy of a letter to parents and a set of questions/answers from the Director and Board Chair that will be going home with students this afternoon.  If you have further questions regarding this that you think I may be able to answer, please be sure to contact me.

Thank you very much for your support over the cancellation of the dance last night.  At approximately 6 p.m., we were notified that a city water main had broken and that repairs would necessitate the shutting off of the water supply to the school.  We simply could not run the dance without students having access to bathroom facilities or without operational fire hoses in the building.  The student council, despite spending hours decorating for the event responded quickly and calmly to the cancellation.  They switched gears to post signs, answer phones and to take down decorations.  We have a wonderful group of student leaders at PCVS!  The dance will be re-scheduled for a later date which will be communicated to both you and our students well in advance.

We have a very exciting opportunity for our entire school community this coming week.  Critically acclaimed Canadian musician, Sarah Slean will be in Peterborough to perform on the evening of Wednesday November 2.  She has agreed to perform in a FREE concert for our students that same afternoon at 2 p.m. in our auditorium, followed by a question period.  The students (and staff) are very excited and I'm certain that it will be a wonderful celebration.

In Uganda, children who live in rural villages are at the risk of being kidnapped and conscripted as child soldiers.  In an effort to be safe, each night groups of children walk miles into the city in hopes that being in a public space will offer protection.  They then walk back to their homes and families in the morning.  Each year, PCVS students participate in the Gulu walk in support of the children of Uganda and to raise international awareness of this issue.  Students with staff supervisors, will walk from Lakefield to PCVS where they will spend the night and will then walk the reverse path the next morning.  The event is scheduled for next Sat., Nov 5th and Sun., November 6th.  Mr. Douglas and Mr. Bigg are the staff advisors.

We are busy planning for the Remembrance Day service on November 11th.  The students of PCVS along with veteran guests, will attend a student led service in the auditorium beginning at 9:30 after which the entire school will join the public service in Confederation Park.  This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to get a better understanding of the day and to better appreciate the sacrifice of the 167 un-returning PCVS students who volunteered for World War I and II.

That is all for now although there is a great deal more information about events at the school in the attachment.

Have a great weekend and please don't hesitate to give me a call any time.

Take care

Good Afternoon

Please find attached this week's issue of the All In A Week.

Congratulations to this week's Raiders of the Week, Jenna Marinigh and Hannah Best.  As co-chairs of the Terry Fox committee, Jenna and Hannah led our school's efforts to raise $14,000 towards cancer research.  They were unfailingly positive, dedicated and committed to the cause.  They spear-headed a huge range of events including bake sales, raffles and a talent show.  Due to Hannah and Jenna's efforts and those of their volunteers, we had a very successful and exciting Terry Fox campaign at PCVS this year!

Last Friday evening, the PCVS auditorium was alight with excitement as we welcomed 166 graduates home to receive their diplomas, with an astounding 96 students as Ontario Scholars.  It was a beautifully, joyful night!  We followed commencement up with the Academic Awards assembly this morning when we recognized students who achieved the highest standing in each of the courses.  I am always thrilled that the audience is genuinely happy for the accomplishments of their class-mates.

If your child is in grade eleven or twelve, you might be interested in attending the University Information night which PCVS is hosting for all Peterborough area high schools this Wednesday, October 26th from 7 to 9 p.m.  All twenty-one Ontario universities will have representatives here and it is a good opportunity to get a thorough overview of what the different schools have to offer.  As it is a small group setting you will have a chance to speak directly with students who are currently attending each of the schools and they will be able to answer many of your specific questions.

This week is spirit week as we move into the Hallowe'en dance on Thursday night (7 - 10 p.m.).  Students are encouraged to dress in costumes for the dance, which is free to all.

As part of our poverty intervention initiatives, SMAC (Arts Council) is running a "Trick or Canning" event to collect food for the food share.  As you may be aware, we operate a food bank at the school for students and we are always in need of replenishing the stocks of food and hygiene items.  Additionally as a number of our students live on their own, we also operate a small clothing exchange to meet specific needs.  Donations of new or gently used items are appreciated.

Have a great week and please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns.

Good Morning

Please find attached this week's issue of the All In A Week.

Congratulations to this week's Raiders of the Week, Fisal Mohamedzadeh and Alex Nelson.  As co-captains of the varsity boys soccer team, Alex and Fisal have provided excellent leadership throughout the season.  Alex has been the mainstay of the team's defence, and Fisal operates as the key player in the midfield.  Both athletes are instrumental to the team's success while encouraging their team-mates on the field. For leadership in both practices and games, as well as their positive attitudes and sense of humour, Fisal and Alex are fitting recipients of the Raider of the Week award.

This Friday evening we will be hosting the graduating class of 2010/11 as they return to accept their graduation diplomas at Commencement.  This is a very exciting event and we look forward to sharing in the celebration with students and their families!

Each year, grade ten students of PCVS go out into the community to help area senior citizens with their fall yard work.  Mr. Cook (Guidance department) is organizing the event and will ensure that students are transported safely to and from their work area.  If your child is interested, they can sign up in the Guidance department.

The Academic Awards Assembly is scheduled for Monday, October 24th at 9 a.m. in the auditorium.  If your child is receiving an award, he/she received a letter inviting parents to the gathering.  It is heart-warming assembly each year as the students are genuinely pleased for their classmates who achieve academic excellence.

Last week's Terry Fox run, walk and concert was a resounding success!  Each year I am astonished by the magnitude of the event as approximately 4500 students and staff gather at Nichol's Oval in support of Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope.  It requires huge teams of staff and students to plan and execute such an event, yet somehow they manage to make it look effortless!  Our own student organizers, Jenna Marinigh and Hannah Best, as well as the huge team of student and staff volunteers deserve a boat load of congratulations and thanks!

Have a wonderful week and please give me a call if you have any concerns.

Good Afternoon

Please find attached next week's issue of the All In A Week.

I hope you enjoyed a restful and celebratory Thanksgiving weekend with family and friends.  What glorious weather we had!

As we didn't announce this week's Raider of the Week until the assembly last Monday, I want to congratulation Matthew Finlan.  Matt is always a tremendous student leader and role model, however his demeanor and dedication have been particularly appreciated in recent weeks.  Matt is unfailingly supportive of students and the school and is an articulate spokesperson for his peers.  He has taught many of us a few lessons about composure even in times of travail.  Matt spoke eloquently and passionately at Monday's assembly and I am very proud to be able to work with him each day.

A further congratulations to next week's Raiders of the Week, Robyn Bull and Kate Taylor.  Robyn and Kate orchestrated a dinner for 140 students and staff at Riley's before the first dance.  Their efforts ensured that every grade nine student was able to go to the dance with a group of supportive peers and they had a great time despite the torrential rain.  Thank you Kate and Robyn.

IEP consultations have been completed with grade 9 students and their IEP's have been sent home for consultation with parents.  Parents are asked to review the IEP, make comments on the Consultation form and return signed form to the Resource room.  IEP's for grade 10-12 students will be coming home in draft form with progress reports on October 11.  Students and parents, please review the IEP and make comments on the Consultation form.  Signed Consultation forms are to be returned to the Resource room (room 117) by October 17.  Please feel free to contact Mrs. Moloney or Ms. Christie if you have any questions or concerns about an IEP.

The annual Terry Fox run is tomorrow.  We will be running shortened periods in the morning so that students are able to be on the buses for 11:10.  If your child is not participating, he/she will have supervised study time in the cafeteria (they should come with work).  The Terry Fox event is always a fabulous one and each year it is a remarkable sight to behold - thousands of high school students coming together to support and honour the legacy of Terry Fox.

Progress reports were issued to students today and they should be coming home in backpacks tonight.  These early reports carry letter grades which teachers will be eager to discuss in greater detail at the parent/teacher interviews on Thursday evening (6 - 8:30 in the gyms).  I look forward to seeing you then.

That is all for now - have a wonderful week!

Good Afternoon

Please find attached this week's issue of the All In A Week.

As indicated in my message on the weekend, we began the day with a full school assembly.  It was both emotional and motivational.  The entire school sang Oh Canada together as led by the Women's Choir, followed by our daily moment of silence.  The sound of 900 voices was followed by absolute silence. Matt Finlan and Collin Chepeka spoke on behalf of the students and they did a fabulous job.

Students were in their regular classes all day today and we will continue to run with full classes all week.  As teachers prepare for progress reports it is imperative that students be in class.  Progress reports will be issued on October 11th, rather than October 6th and Parent Teacher interviews will be held on the 13th from 6 - 8:30 p.m. as originally planned.

Last spring we had scheduled a motivational speaker to address the full school.  One of our goals this year is to focus on raising awareness about youth mental health and tomorrow's speaker is a young man with Downs Syndrome who is also an accomplished musician.  Thank you to Tri-County Community Support Services for making this presentation available to us.

Thank you for the kind emails and messages that you have been sending to the staff in recent days.  It is wonderful to know that we have such a supportive parent community!

Take care and please call me if you have any concerns.

Good Evening

You will note that the All in A Week is not attached to this email, however I will send next week’s edition on Monday.  I want deliver a couple of messages before then so that you have an understanding of how things will go next week.

As you know, our school community has just gone through a challenging time and I know that next week will again be difficult for students and parents.  Please be assured that I am working with students as well as school and board staff to provide support as needed in the days ahead.

Let me begin by saying, how very proud we, the staff, are of your children, and our students.  They were exemplary leaders for their peers last week and without fail acted with integrity, empathy and respect in a most difficult and emotional time.  They were supportive of each other and sensitive to the feelings of others while having a voice in something they believe in.  I am certain that in the days ahead, we will continue to see their actions embody the “PCVS Way”.

While the teachers and of course our own Guidance counsellors will be there to help kids, we will also have School Board Counsellors on hand Monday for students who need that extra level of support.  If you think that your child is particularly fragile, please be sure to contact me and I will quietly alert particular teachers to keep an extra close eye on him or her.

I think that it is critical that we spend some time together as a school on Monday and therefore we will begin our day with an assembly.  Students will go to period one for the morning bell after which I will them call them to the auditorium.  The purpose of this gathering is to acknowledge where we have been, where we are at now and to start thinking about what is to come.  Both students and teachers will be speaking.

School staff spent a fair bit of time yesterday talking about how we should frame Monday, what it is that the students will need and what messages we can send that would best help them.  We will of course run with a regular day schedule on Monday, but teachers know that flexibility and understanding in programming will be necessary.

I will give you a further up-date on Monday afternoon when I forward the All in a Week.

As parents, the messages we give our children have tremendous influence.  There has been some "back on forth" on social networking sites that offer us concern as they seem to be fuelling the fires of conflict and dissension between our students and those of TASSS.  We will take every opportunity to encourage students to be kind to each other and to remember that the love they have for their school cannot be manifested as disdain for another.  If you could echo that message at home, it would go a long way towards eliminating future conflict.

Thank you for your on-going support of, and belief in the school, the teaching staff and our student Raiders.

Please be sure to contact me if you have any particular concerns that I can address at this time.

Sincerely
Denise

Good Afternoon

Please find this week's issue of the All In A Week attached.  You will also find the minutes from the first School Council meeting attached.  Thank you to Michael Saunders for creating these so quickly!

Congratulations to Ava Brown Mantha who is this week's Raider of the Week.  Ava is always willing to help those in need of assistance - staff and students alike.  She has been particularly helpful in training our new announcement crew and her kindness has been very much appreciated.

The kick off for the Terry Fox event was yesterday.  In a tremendously moving and yet energetic assembly, student leaders Jenna Marinigh and Hannah Best spoke eloquently about the need for the PCVS student body to become involved.  In the 28 years that PCVS has participated in this event, our community has raised $278,000!  Fundraising events include:

Saturday September 24:Farmers Market: – 11:30 – 1:00pm, Collecting donations
Saturday October 1:
Head of the Trent 6:00 am to 6:00pm. Operating the canteen for rowers and spectators. Baked goods made and donated by PCVS students to be sold.
Farmers Market: 8:30 – 10:00. Collecting donations
Sunday October 2, 2011:Car Wash 12:00 – 3:00pm in the PCVS Parking lot, $5.00.
Tuesday October 11, 2011:Concert 7:00 – 10:00 pm, PCVS Auditorium. PCVS Bands and talents to entertain, $3.00 entry
Daily Raffle Tickets for DBIA members gift cards and gifts. Sold outside the Auditorium at lunch.
Committee meets each Tuesday and Thursday at lunch – 11:20 am in room 205.  All are welcome to join in our fundraising.

The first school dance will be held on Wednesday night with the theme of "Welcome Home to the Raider Dome".  We are hoping that all of our grade nines will attend a pre-dance dinner at Riley's with their link leaders (and staff supervisors).  A poster is attached with all the information.  The dance will run from 7 - 10 p.m. and it is always a wonderful time!

Finally, a reminder that Friday, September 30th is a PD day and the school will not be open to students.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Good Morning

Please find attached this week's issue of the All In A Week.

The first School Council meeting will be held this Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in the library.  At this time we will set the calendar of future meetings and fill the executive positions.  All are welcome!

SAC packs will continue to be sold this week.  By purchasing a Student Activity card, students will be able to attend all dances and events as well as participate in school teams and clubs.

There will be a meeting for grade twelve students at lunch on Wednesday the 21st.  Mr. Cook, the head of the Guidance department will speak to students about the processes for applying to colleges and universities as well as options available for financial assistance.  I would highly recommend that all graduating students attend.

Each year, Peterborough area high schools participate in the Terry Fox run. We will kick off this year's campaign with an assembly on Thursday.  Students will be issued permission forms and pledge sheets in school on Friday.

Good Morning

Please find attached this week's issue of the All in a Week.

The opening week went well.  I think it was exciting for everyone!

Student photos were taken last week.  If your child was absent, there will be a photo re-take day which will be posted on the All in a Week.

Student Activity Packs go on sale in homerooms this week.  The $40 card allows students to participate in clubs, sports etc., and to all school dances and events.

If your student is in grade nine and is interested in being involved in student leadership, they may be interested in running for the position of Grade Nine Rep on Student Council.  Candidates will make a brief presentation to their peers on September 27th, followed by an election.

This year, this mailing to parents will often include a message from School Council and the Chair of the group, Margaret Marchen.  The first such message is below, entitled "Council Corner".  Enjoy!

Dear Parents,

We would like to welcome all new and seasoned parents to this new year at the exciting and vibrant school that is PCVS.  We are sure that your "child" will enjoy the experience!

For those of you who may be new to high school, the KPRDSB is undergoing a review of its city secondary schools due to declining enrollment.  The school trustees will vote on September 29th on the administration recommendation to close a Peterborough high school. While the number one recommendation is to close TASS as a secondary school and use it as board offices and a science facility for all students, the second option is to close PCVS. Our students would be dispersed to other high schools and the building used to house alternative programs.

We need your support to keep the school open. We want to ensure that PCVS continues as a successful and dynamic secondary school for the students and families of Peterborough. Please join the parents of the council at a meeting on Wednesday, September 14th at 7 pm in the school auditorium.  At this time we will update you on the issues and where things stand.  If you are not able to attend please contact us at  pcvscouncil@hotmail.ca with any questions or suggestions that you may have.

Looking forward to connecting with you!

Good Afternoon

I hope you enjoyed a wonderful and rejuvenating summer!

You will find attached the first issue of the All In A Week for this school year.  You will see that the first four days of classes are busy ones indeed!  All students will attend opening day assemblies tomorrow at which time we will discuss the year ahead, school procedures and answer any questions students may have.

We had a fabulous grade nine orientation last Wednesday, hosted by our senior LINK crew.  Ms. Rankin has worked all summer to prepare for the event and deserves much thanks! Ms. Rankin and Mr. Kivari put on a spectacularly entertaining show for about 150 grade nine students.  At the same time, we ran an orientation for parents of grade nine students and over 100 parents were in attendance.  This is the third year for that event which has proven to be very popular.

Mr. Cook and Ms. Miller in the Guidance office have been busy registering new students and adjusting timetables for those returning.  All students in grades nine, ten and eleven are required to carry four classes per semester.  For those still wishing to have timetable changes, appointments will made to see a counselor, however students must attend all classes on their schedule until a change is officially made.  We have a full school this year, and many of the classes are at capacity, so changes are very difficult to make at this point.

On Wednesday, we will be holding the annual Organizational Fair in the gym which allows students to see what clubs, teams and activities are being offered this year.  The fair is a busy, energy-filled event and I would encourage everyone to check out what is being offered and to jump right into activities.

Thursday is picture day.  It is critical that every student have a photo taken, regardless of whether they will wish to purchase a photo package.  The student and library card needs a photo on it to activate it.

In August, PCVS traveled to California to compete in the Hurley Walk the Walk competition under the leadership of Ms. Hosker and Ms. Clarke.  Preparation required hours and hours of rehearsals and administrative work and every participant deserves to be commended.  Our team of twenty dancers, artists and designers were remarkable and if you haven't yet seen a video, I would encourage you to check out the selections on Youtube!

The custodians have worked very hard to get the school ready for tomorrow, and it is looking beautiful!  I hope your child has a great first day and I look forward to speaking with many of you over the coming months.  As always, please call or email me if you have any concerns.

Take care,
