Students taking co-operative education obtain credits through supervised work placement experiences.
Once a student enters the co-op program, the co-op teacher and the student determine a suitable placement from the many co-op placements available. An interview would be arranged with the potential co-op employer. If the student is accepted by the employer, the company designates an employee to supervise the learning at the placement.
A Personalized Placement Learning Plan (PPLP) is developed by the teacher, student and the workplace supervisor. This helps to link learning opportunities at the placement with a student's academic studies, personal goals and abilities. A co-op teacher monitors the student's progress at the workplace on a regular basis to assess student progress. A typical placement would be for a morning or afternoon for an entire semester. A student would then earn 2 credits upon the successful completion of the program.
As part of the co-op program, the co-op student also attends in-school classes ('pre-employment sessions' before starting at the placement and 'integration sessions' throughout the semester). These classes teach a variety of employability skills and workplace awareness skills as well as integrate the student’s out-of-school learning with a pre-requisite course.
Co-op employers do not pay students for their work. Students earn credits.
